I was born in San Francisco and raised in San Mateo county. I lived in Daly City for most of my life before moving to San Mateo for high school. I recently received my B.A. in Comparative Ethnic Studies and B.S. in Agricultural Business from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and it was in these spaces that I discovered my passion for ethnic studies, social justice, and education.
This is my first year teaching, and I am immeasurably grateful for this experience. I believe that learning is a communal process and that the best teachers are people who never stopped being students. I hope that students in my class feel empowered and excited by learning, growing evermore curious in the ways that they may grow and apply lessons they learn. I joined PEP for the opportunity to be a student again, to both teach and learn alongside my students and co-teachers. I want to share the critical, life-changing knowledge that is ethnic studies.
Outside of PEP, I enjoy yoga, hiking, camping, journaling, collaging, videography, and being a plant parent. I am passionate about nature and learning more about the ways in which we are all connected. I believe the key to our collective liberation is found in the ways we are connected to one another.

AV

I was born in San Diego, raised in Paradise Hills, CA. Originally I am from Southeast San Diego, Paradise Hills. I studied Asian American studies at San Francisco State. My work experience expands from working in a coffee shop to working at the Bayanihan Equity Center in the South of Market. Other than that my other passions are music and video production. I plan to pursue a career in teaching at the high school and/or higher education level, specifically community college. As a first generation college student I want to center my focus toward empowering my students to not only find a path in their education, but as a passion they are happy with pursuing.

Carla

I was born in the Philippines, raised in Union City. My hobbies include photography, baking, barista-ing, learning (skincare or a new hobby), decorating, listening to music, cutting hair, and now taking care of plants! I consider myself introverted, but willing to step out of my comfort zone. Outside of PEP, I am a middle school after school teacher!
My high school had a strong legacy of ethnic studies and social justice that set a foundation for what drives me today. In college, I studied Sociology and Comparative Ethnic Studies. More importantly, experiences in and out the classroom taught me to critically engage with the world. I left college a more outspoken and loving individual. I joined PEP because I love ethnic studies. Ethnic studies, the community and the discipline, was my rock in college. Also a Filipina, being in community with my people is important and PEP is the perfect mixture. In the future (and present), I am trying to be a teacher that advocates for everyone’s full humanity. I hope to have a creative side bizz with some of my hobbies too!

Kaylah

I was born and raised in San Francisco, California. I knew I wanted to be active in my community and fight for social justice in high school when I learned about Ethnic Studies and as I grew up in a growingly gentrified Mission District in San Francisco. I am currently in my senior year at San Francisco State University majoring in Political Science and double minoring in Race and Resistance Studies as well as Education. Other than PEP, I also am a student assistant to a Coordinator for the Metro College Success Program at SFSU, which helps first-gen, low-income, POC students navigate their first two years in college. I am also heavily involved with San Francisco Rising, a Grassroots organization aiming to build political power of working class communities and communities of color in SF. I decided to join PEP because of the ways Ethnic Studies has empowered me, inspired me, and taught me so much about who I am and my community. PEP has given me a space to be in solidarity with and have critical dialogue with other Filipinx folks, which is something I am super grateful for because I’ve never been in this kind of space before.

Kevin

I was born and raised in San Francisco, CA in the Ocean View neighborhood. I moved to Daly City, CA in 2007 having lived there now for 13 years and counting. Having been able to live through both of those communities gave me the opportunity to work with youth from Kindergarten to 12th graders. From my time in PEP to working in an afterschool program, I was able to decide for myself that I wanted to pursue a major in Asian American Studies and minor in Education at San Francisco State University. PEP has made a great impact in my life as a student and as an educator, helping me grow and discover more about myself in order for me to do the same for my students in the classroom. Interests of mine are art (sketching, painting, photoshop), anime/manga (Naruto, One Piece, Haikyu!), professional wrestling, and sports (NBA &NFL). On the side I like to coach basketball with elementary and middle school students, hoping to eventually coach at the high school level.

Kevyn

I was born and raised in San Francisco in the Mission district and became passionate about ethnic studies when I was in a Filipino studies program called Kababayan Learning Community at Skyline College. I transferred to UCLA and was the first in my family to get a college degree (Asian American Studies and Labor Workplace Studies). Today, I do a lot of community organizing around human rights here in San Francisco and in the Philippines. I am a graduate masters candidate in Asian American Studies at SFSU and work in the elementary afterschool programs for Community Youth Center San Francisco. My interests are watching films, mixing music, cooking, barbering, and reading! I joined PEP because I didn't have role models nor knew about my culture in high school, therefore I want to provide that support to students that foster growth in their identity and their relationship in the community.

Redjan

I was born and raised in south-Stockton and became passionate about social justice work through my internship with the Little Manila Foundation. I graduated from UC Berkeley with a double major in Public Health and Asian American & Asian Diaspora Studies. In addition to PEP, I work at uAspire as a Senior College Affordability Advisor that supports postsecondary students in navigating the financial aid process and college.  I enjoy practicing mindfulness through bullet journaling, music and live performances, and connecting with friends and family through games, cooking, and shows. I joined PEP because Ethnic Studies has had a positive impact on my life and I want to continue creating education spaces that center community care, social justice, and transformative change

Sean

I was born in Pateros, Metro-manila, Philippines and was raised in different cities throughout California before my parents settled in a small city east of the bay area, Tracy, CA. I define myself as a student, educator and creator. I am an alumni of SFSU with a BA in Communication Studies and Minor in Asian American Studies. I was an educator previously at Burton High School, now at Balboa. I am a creator through my photography business where I spend most of my time these days.  I enjoy communicating with my peers about our world experiences and documenting these moments through photography and occasionally writing. I play a lot of video games and spend most of my time these days watching old sitcoms.  I joined PEP because Ethnic Studies has shown me how to reach self and community actualization, and actively work towards radical liberation for all peoples.
