Focus: Pre-colonial Philippine History

Course Description:
In the waters of Longfellow Bay, we will embark on our year-long adventure on our balangay (boat) and work together as a barangay (community) in order to learn about our individual stories, each other’s stories, the stories of our communities, and the stories of pre-colonial Philippines. We will sail together and navigate how all of these stories are interconnected to better understand our present and create a better future.

Learning Goals:
At the end of the semester, students will:
  • ​Know more about what it means to be a part of a barangay, the stories they bring in, and the stories of their kasamas.
  • Be able to build community and empathize.
  • See themselves in the curriculum because their experiences and interests will be taken into account and centered in the lesson plans
  • Have authentic and real relationships with teachers and each other.

Focus:​ Colonization & Filipina/o/x American History

Course Description:

For 333 years, Spain ruled over the islands of the Philippines and its peoples. The lasting effects of colonization in the Philippines is still seen today by the stealing of land and the silencing of people. First, students will build with one another as a barangay and then venture off into understanding how Spain colonized the Philippines. This semester, students will understand colonization through the following L’s of Colonization:

  • Land
  • Love
  • Labor
  • Legacy

In this course, students will build connections to their past in order to understand their present and imagine a better future.
Learning Goals:
In this class, the students will:
  1. Understand the relationship and role of power throughout the history of colonization and its effects today.
  2. Critically question the relationships of power in the past and the present to understand their own relationship with power to create a positive future.
  3. Center their experiences within the learning process of the class by exploring their cultural and historical capital to find value in themselves.
  4. Develop brave relationships with teachers by collaborating with other students to promote dialogue and authentic relationships.
  5. Creative supportive relationships with each other through creating and sharing the classroom space together and help each others’ learning as a barangay

4TH/5TH GRADE

Focus: Seven Waves of Immigration & Social Movements

Course Description:
The first Filipinos to arrive in what we now know as the United States arrived in Morro Bay, CA in 1587 . In this course, our class will be a barangay (community) that will explore the  journey back in time to learn about the stories of these ancestors from. From Morro Bay through all of the waves of Filipin@ immigration to America, we will  learn more about the different waves of Filipinos arriving to the United States, but ourselves, each other, and how we are all connected and a part Filipina/o/x American herstory/history. Our learning, growth, and our contribution to the fight for liberation will be done through various forms of artistic expression and community action, and show how building connections to our past, in order to understand our present,  will help us build a better future.

Learning Goals:
  • The students will know about each other’s stories, along with the stories of early Filipinas/os/xs that arrived to America. The students will be able to connect their experiences and to those ancestors who made those early voyages.
  • The students will see themselves in the curriculum because their stories and ideas will be centered in the curriculum by sharing their narratives about their family and how they came to America.
  • Students will have brave relationships with teachers and each other.
